History[]
The Peltast (Greek: πελταστής, pl. πελτασται) was a skirmisher in the Greek armies. Their tactics and style of armanents originating in Thrace, peltasts were equiped with a light shield called a péltē (Greek: πέλτη) from which peltasts get their name, javelins, and other secondary arms such as short swords or daggers. Usually lacking any sort of heavy armor, if protected at all, peltasts donned light cloth armor. Although rarely decisive in battle by themselves, they could inflict a continual stream of injuries on an enemy that lacked skirmishers of their own. Peltasts were used to great effect during the Graeco-Persian Wars and thereafter. Not All Peltasts were of Thracian Origin, during the 200's BCE Greece started train hoplites and Farmers to throw Javelins (or Sarissa) instead of Using the Spears in Melee Combat they would use Swords or Daggers.
