History
As a religion, Christianity spread rapidly throughout the Roman Empire.
The first Christian churches appeared in Jerusalem, Rome, Alexandria, Athens, Antioch, and then Byzantium. The religion in the Roman Empire was met with some resistance as its adherents would refuse to comply with the Roman state in offering sacrifice to the pagan gods. The persecutions dissipated after the conversion of Constantine the Great in 324 AD, around the same time the emperor moved the empire's capital to Byzantium, later called Constantinople. With the split between the Eastern and Western Roman Empires came the division of Western Latin-speaking Christianity and Eastern Greek-speaking Christianity. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476, the divisions of the church became further alienated as Germanic tribes converted into Western Christianity. By the Middle Ages, the church split into two separate entities: the Catholic Church and the Greek Orthodox Church. Both churches claim to be "One Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church". While there is no "true" head of the Orthodox Church, a large body of the church is called a patriarchy. From greatest to least in rank goes the Ecunumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Patriarch, Archbishop, Metropolitan, Bishop, Archimandrite, Priest, and Deacon.
The Greek Orthodox priests has a beard and long hair, for he avows to not trim his beard or hair, unlike his Catholic counterpart. The chimney-top hat worn by in-game priests were worn historically by clergy who've converted to Orthodox Christianity. On an additional note, the Greek Priest unit is historically inaccurate. The first Christian priests and Orthodox Christianity didn't exist until the late phases of the Roman Empire.
